A virtual visit to Mindanao

When I visited Tawi Tawi in 2007, I had the opportunity to go to Tango Island, which is a private island owned by the Governor of Tawi Tawi. This little beach is on Tango Island. Very inviting, don’t you think?

This is the Capitol Building in Bongao, Tawi Tawi. It really has the distinctive look of a Mosque, and sits atop a hill overlooking the City of Bongao and many islands of Tawi Tawi. Very beautiful place!

These young school girls caught my attention when visiting a school in Bongao, Tawi Tawi in 2007. They sure are cute, don’t you think?

Bongao Peak is one of Nature’s gifts to the people of Tawi Tawi, it is a gorgeous view. I took this photo from Tango Island, a private island owned by the Governor of Tawi Tawi. The bougainvillea in the foreground seemed to make a perfect frame for Bongao Peak in the distance.

When I arrived on Basilan Island in 2007, I was greeted by this sign – “Welcome to the Island Paradise of Basilan.” Most people, when they think of Basilan think of a dangerous place where you are just as likely to get kidnapped as enjoying a day at the beach. I visited several parts of the Island, didn’t get kidnapped either!

Wao is a small town in Lanao del Sur Province. Most of Lanao del Sur is 90+% Muslim Population, but Wao is more of a 50% Christian – 50% Muslim mix of population. It’s a rather peaceful place, for Lanao del Sur. I visited there in 2007, and really liked the place.

This is the “Bin Laden Store” in Sultan Kudarat Town, Maguindanao, just a few minutes away from Cotabato City. When in that area, I see a lot of people with Bin Laden t-shirts on and such, yet they are also quite friendly toward Americans like me! Amazing!

Along the road between Maramag, Bukidnon and Wao, Lanao del Sur you pass this land border crossing where the two provinces meet each other. Bukidnon is generally peaceful. Lanao del Sur Province strikes fear in the minds of many people, but this part of the Province is generally not a problem.

This is the Central Mosque in Tugaya, Lanao del Sur. This mosque was designed and built by the father of my friend, Ash Tamano. My wife and I visited Tugaya in April 2007, and we really enjoyed the visit. It was so interesting!
