A virtual visit to Mindanao
When I arrived on Basilan Island in 2007, I was greeted by this sign – “Welcome to the Island Paradise of Basilan.” Most people, when they think of Basilan think of a dangerous place where you are just as likely to get kidnapped as enjoying a day at the beach. I visited several parts of the Island, didn’t get kidnapped either!
These houses on stilts are near to Basilan, actually just off Malamawi Island, which is a stone’s throw from Basilan. I visited this area in 2007. In this part of the ARMM (Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao) the people are really water people. They grow up on the water, and living like this is in their DNA. Not many traffic jams in this neighborhood!
